I’m very stiff and inflexible. Will I benefit?
Yes! You have everything to gain. There is no expectation of any degree of flexibility, this takes time. So please don’t worry if you can’t touch your toes 😉
What is the book I will receive?
You will receive a copy of 'Yoga for Beginners' by Cory Martin. Collect yours in class on Tuesday 19th January at the beginners class at St Sebastian's Memorial Hall or it can be posted to you in time for the start of the program.
How do I join the Facebook group?
As it will be a private group just for this cohort of beginners, you will receive an invitation after signing up for the programme. You can use the space to chat and ask questions and I will also be uploading content and resources as we go. For example, if you miss an online session these will be recorded and uploaded to the Facebook group for you to replay and catch up at your leisure. There will also be short 'homework' assignments and exercises for you to try between scheduled sessions.
What happens in the one to one sessions?
The one-to-one's are a 20 minutes video call (or in person at St Sebastian's Memorial Hall before or after a scheduled class). They are your chance to ask any questions or address any concerns which you might not want to raise in a group setting. If you are nervous you may want to schedule this at the start of the programme so we can come up with some strategies to help you feel comfortable, or you may prefer to have your one-to-one later so that you can ask questions about what you have learned so far. It's really up to you 😊
What do I need to participate?
A yoga mat. You can get a reasonable one from about £15 (try Amazon, TK Max, Decathlon). My own personal favourite is the Yoga Matters 'Sticky Mat' (£29 https://www.yogamatters.com/products/yogamatters-sticky-yoga-mat). No affiliation - I have just found these to be exceptionally durable with just the right balance of grip and padding. If you dont have a mat I have a few loan mats for your first class.
What if I can’t attend all the sessions?
All online sessions will be available for replay for one month and your first public class can be on a date of your choice. The class on 19th January can’t be repeated however, so do try to make this one.
What’s the difference between Yoga and Pilates?
Yoga has its roots in ancient philosophies, and is concerned with the mind and breath as integral to whole person wellness alongside the physical practice. Pilates is a modern invention mainly concerned with core stability through repetitive movements. Both are excellent for strength, balance and general fitness. For me, yoga is more holistic, with proven benefits for mental wellbeing as well as physical health.
Do I need to wear lycra?
No. Wear anything comfortable that you can move in.
I've been teaching community yoga in Wokingham for 6 years and never tire of seeing the powerful effects of the practice blossoming within my students. It's like a veil lifts as the joy of movement is rediscovered, the mind clears as pressure drops away, sleep and deep rest arrive easier, confidence builds and often leads to actively seeking new experiences or broadened horizons. Yoga is so much more than a physical practice. I believe yoga is at it's most powerful when integrating movement, mindfulness and breathwork. So I alway include a broad range of asana (shapes) to mobilise, tone and strengthen, pranayama (breathing exercises) and meditation / relaxation.
My in-person classes are accessible, you don't need any experience or to be fit or flexible to take part - there are options for everyone. As they say, 'it's not about touching your toes, it's about what you learn on the way down'.
